History of the Harrington Jacket

Harrington jackets seem to be a must for every skinhead or mod nowadays, which only proves that its     design is truly timeless. It is said that harringtons are 'back', but I would rather say that they never went out.
 

The British firm Baracuta proudly claims to have invented the original design back in 1937 and, mods will excuse me, it was popularized by a rocker. The harrington jacket, especially the G9 model (which the mentioned brand still produces), became fashionable after Elvis Presley wore it in his film 'King Creole' in 1958. In 2007, Baracuta designed a special edition of their classic jacket - 3 models with quotes by Elvis which celebrated the 70th anniversary of the company. It wasn't until 1960s when this kind of jacket started to be known as harrington. Even though it was designed in Manchester, England, it actually owes its name to an American character: Rodney Harrington, who appeared in the soap opera 'Peyton Place' (1964-1969).

Since then it never really went out of fashion. The first mods and skinheads of the 60s quickly adopted this jacket as an essential element of their looks. These styles never really faded away, but the revival that took place in the 70s and 80s made it gain even more popularity. The 90s were no exception, and as well as these mods, skins and scooterboys, many bands and singers of the so called brit-pop could be spotted in one of these classical pieces of clothing.

Seeing that extremely varied types of people did love the harrington jacket, virtually any alternative fashion company has attempted its own reinterpretation of the classic. Nowadays, you can find almost any tone you can imagine combined with many different types of tartan and checked lining, two-tone pieces, women's collections, reversible and even hooded models... However the buttoned collar, zip and two buttoned front pockets are common elements to (almost?) all the variations.

Baracuta may be the original, but harringtons have been produced by dozens of brands since it was designed: Fred Perry, Merc London, Ben Sherman, Relco, Warrior Clothing, Lonsdale, Lambretta, The Spirit of 69 and long etcetera. Unbranded models are also extremely easy to get and constitute the most affordable option. Depending on the manufacturer, the price range varies from just £20 (or even less) to £200 easily.
